Birth Booking

Important information - please read carefully

Appointments to register a birth are usually carried out by telephone (or Microsoft Teams appointment if requested), administered by our team at the City Chambers in Edinburgh.

You will be given the opportunity to pre pay for any certificates you may require.  Please have your payment card to hand.

Ensure that you click the final SUBMIT button to confirm your booking.

Should you subsequently find the date and time you booked is not suitable, or you have any problems with the booking process, please email registrars.city@edinburgh.gov.uk or telephone 0131 529 2600 (voicemail may be in operation).

For the purpose of this booking system the term "mother" refers to the person who gave birth to the child.

Who should register

If the parents are married, or in a registered civil partnership, only one parent needs to speak to the registrar.

If the parents are not married, or in a registered civil partnership, both should be in a position to speak to the registrar during the appointment if they wish both their names to appear in the register.

The mother can speak to the registrar on her own however the father or other parent's name would not normally appear in the register.

The father or other parent cannot normally register on their own.

If you wish both parents’ names to appear in the register but cannot speak to the registrar together, please contact the office for advice before continuing with this booking.

Register a child that is not yours

Only in exceptional circumstances can anyone other than the parents register the birth of a child. Contact us for information.

What is your relationship to the child?
